The Formosa Budding Hope Association has established itself in Cambodia for nearly ten years in helping improve children’s education, women’s vocational education, medical care in the rural areas, and social services such as community building. This year, the Cambodian Secretary of State, Mr. Sov Souvth, invited the group to the Prey Veng Province on the borders of Cambodia, from Dec. 12 to 13, to provide medical aid.

The director of the Formosa Budding Hope Association, Sally Yu, said that the group set up an emergency department, a family medicine department, and a pediatrics department. A mere two days saw about 545 patients, including villagers and children. The association also donated 800 boxes of instant noodles, 3,000 notebooks and about 500 kg of clothes, shoes, and stationery. In addition, the association used the contributions from the people in Taiwan to help build three restrooms for the Theam Nimith Elementary School.

Last year, under the combined efforts of the Formosa Budding Hope Association and the Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taipei, a ten-year-old Cambodian child named Tola, underwent a successful heart surgery. This year, Tola, accompanied by his grandmother, visited the medical aid center set up in the province. The director of the medical team, Lee Chao-Hsiung, had previously spent around US$500 from his own account to help get Tola to the international hospital at Khema to accurately diagnose his heart condition. This played an integral part in letting the hospitals in Taiwan understand Tola’s conditions and cure him.

Lee Chao-Hsiung states that “seeing Tola at the medical aid site and being able to personally track his heart movements brought me back to last year when he was having an ultrasound. The image of his pounding heart is no longer different from other children. Witnessing his growth spurt and his healthy appearance really touched me, and I thank God! Thanks to everyone, we were able to make this beautiful thing happen and help Tola build a regular life.”
